My name’s Michael Casey, and since 2016 I’ve been making handcrafted bellows-blown smallpipes on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, with a strong focus on quality, tone, and attention to detail.
My love of piping began when I was about 10 years old, after starting lessons in the early 90s with an incredible teacher, mentor, and friend, Malcolm Stewart. Malcolm’s patience, musicianship, and eye for detail made learning the pipes both rewarding and enjoyable. Thanks to his guidance, I went on to compete in several piping events around the Sydney region throughout my teenage years, with many successful results.
Around that time, I was also lucky enough to meet a number of highly skilled musicians, including world-class Uilleann pipe maker Ian Mackenzie. Ian had spent decades refining his craft and generously shared his knowledge and passion for building instruments with a warm, bright sound and steady tuning.
Many years later, returning to pipe making and putting those skills back into practice has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.
